  •  Promotes adequate fish larvae development and growth, similar to green water using live microalgae
  • Fish larvae manifest a better ability to respond to stress conditions when compared with live microalgae, as evidenced by gene expression of antioxidant enzymes
  • Reduces skeletal malformations and the percentage of individuals with affected phenotype compared to live microalgae
  • Product demonstrates prophylactic characteristics due the probiotics and microalgae species used. It can reduce Vibrionaceae tanks and consequently the probability of outbreaks

Training network for exploring microalgae diversity for the development of novel antiviral compounds

Project number: 101086437

Objectives:

  • Develop transcriptomics and metabolomics resources from microalgae diversity as a valuable source of novel lectins and polyphenols with antiviral properties
  • Develop and optimize application-based microalgae culture systems at different scales and optimize culture conditions and downstream processing strategies for higher production rate of desired products
  • A range of different unexploited so far strains (extremophiles) that display high ability to produce polyphenols will be characterised and assessed
  • Develop, formulate and in vitro evaluate a new range of cosmetic products with antiviral activity, based on microalgae polyphenols and lectins
  • Provide a platform for the efficient transfer of knowledge and training between the academic and commercial partners

Objectives:

  • The Blue Bioeconomy Pact (Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul, PBA) has the main goal to drive the development of a cutting-edge industrial sector in Portugal, based on applying marine bioresources to a range of industries. The consortium is made up of 83 Portuguese organisations, organized in 7 industrial verticals.
  • The Algae Vertical is one of the PBA verticals and is led by Necton. Its main objective is to valorise the entire value chain of the Algae sector in Portugal. Therefore, it has around 40 entities from the Portuguese business and academic sector, focused on the use of nutrients or waste from other industries, the digitalization/automation of production processes, the improvement of knowledge about algae and the development of new products based on algae.
