FEEDS

Microalgae play a crucial nutritional role for the marine animals. Phytoplankton is the basis of the marine food chain. Most marine invertebrates depend on microalgae for their whole life cycle.

Microalgae are used in aquaculture hatcheries for fish, shrimp, and shellfish larviculture, especially for live-prey cultivation and enrichment of Rotifers and Artemia. Microalgae may be also used to perform the Green Water Technique widely reported as improving fish larvae growth, survival, and feed ingestion to develop the immunological system, pigmentation and swim bladder function. It has also been reported that the Green Water Technique has positive effect on the stabilization of water quality within the rearing tanks.

Microalgae also present unique opportunities as functional ingredients for pet food applications as a source of protein, fatty acids (Omega 3 EPA and DHA), antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They can improve intestinal health, the shine and strength of the coat and activate the immune system of animals and are beneficial for various health conditions such as inflammation, skin and kidneys diseases and osteoarthritis.

An innovative combination of microalgae and probiotics were used to develop products for green water technique, rotifers culture, and live feed enrichment.

Green WATER

The powder marvel for green water technique. It enhances microalgae stability, bacterial quality, and larval stress resistance.

rotifers +

The optimal powdered diet for rotifers maintains water quality, boosts rotifer health, and reduces ammonia buildup.

The premium powder for live prey ensures balanced nutrition, high survival rates, and larval stress resistance.

AlgaeNet4AV

Training network for exploring microalgae diversity for the development of novel antiviral compounds

Project number: 101086437

Objectives:

  • Develop transcriptomics and metabolomics resources from microalgae diversity as a valuable source of novel lectins and polyphenols with antiviral properties
  • Develop and optimize application-based microalgae culture systems at different scales and optimize culture conditions and downstream processing strategies for higher production rate of desired products
  • A range of different unexploited so far strains (extremophiles) that display high ability to produce polyphenols will be characterised and assessed
  • Develop, formulate and in vitro evaluate a new range of cosmetic products with antiviral activity, based on microalgae polyphenols and lectins
  • Provide a platform for the efficient transfer of knowledge and training between the academic and commercial partners

Blue Bioeconomy Pact – Algae Vertical

Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul - Vertical Algas

Reference: C644915664-00000026

Objectives:

  • The Blue Bioeconomy Pact (Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul, PBA) has the main goal to drive the development of a cutting-edge industrial sector in Portugal, based on applying marine bioresources to a range of industries. The consortium is made up of 83 Portuguese organisations, organized in 7 industrial verticals.
  • The Algae Vertical is one of the PBA verticals and is led by Necton. Its main objective is to valorise the entire value chain of the Algae sector in Portugal. Therefore, it has around 40 entities from the Portuguese business and academic sector, focused on the use of nutrients or waste from other industries, the digitalization/automation of production processes, the improvement of knowledge about algae and the development of new products based on algae.
